What do you teach? I teach note reading on the staff, reading tablature and chording. I also use books that are tailored to the student's interest, such as country, classical, blues, gospel or
rock.
Where do I purchase books and how much will they cost? All books may be purchased or special-ordered through the studio. Each level will run between $10 and $20, depending on what level
the student is at.
What ages do you teach? I teach ages 5 through adult. I use various method books geared to the age of the student.
Do I need a guitar? Yes, either an acoustic or electric guitar, as well as a case and tuner. If you purchase an electric, you will also need an amplifier for home practice. It is
very important to choose a guitar that the student can hold properly. Very young children need quarter- or half-size guitars. Middle elementary students usually need three-quarter-size
guitars. A full-size guitar should not be purchased until a student is 5'4" or taller. Guitars, cases and tuners may be purchased through the studio, as well as picks and strings.
How often are lessons? Private lessons are taken once a week for 30 minutes, and one-hour group lessons are taken 3 to 4 times a year. The cost of tuition is explained in detail in Policies. In addition to the private lesson students will also have computer lab assignments.
Do parents attend lessons with the child? It is usually helpful for parents to attend lessons with young children (under age 8). In addition, they will need lots of support with their
home practice and theory lessons. A few students will "act up" if a parent is in the room. Those students do better without a parent in attendance, but will still need supervision
at home.
How much practice is required? Everyone should start out with only a few 5-minute sessions a day until their fingers start to develop calluses. After that, students should continue to
increase practice time until it is a minimum of 30 minutes per day, at least four days a week. Of course, additional practice will move students toward their goals more quickly.
Do you have any openings? You may check the Schedule to see if there are any openings. If there is an opening that would meet your needs, please call the studio to arrange an interview.
