Piano Lessons

Second Street Music Academy

Piano  lessons at Second Street Music Academy are taught on a 5'8" Yamaha Grand piano.  There is also a Roland digital piano that is used for playing MIDI disks and  duets. Students may also practice on a Roland digital piano while they  are waiting before or after lessons. The studio has a computer with several  kinds of music software to help students with music theory, ear training and rhythm.  The  following are answers to frequently asked questions:

What books do you use? For beginning students, I use the Hal Leonard Piano Lessons series or Piano Adventures.  More advanced students play from the Celebration Series, which are published by the Canadian Royal Academy of Music and contains music from the Baroque Era to modern compositions.  In addition, students may choose supplementary books of hymns, jazz, pop or whatever suits their interest.

Where do I purchase books and how much will they cost? All books may be purchased or special-ordered through the studio.  Each level will run between $10 and $20, depending on what level the student is at.  I use a method book, theory book and finger exercise book with each level.

What ages do you teach? I teach ages 5 through adult. My young beginners start by reading finger numbers and notes off the staff.  There are good adult books now that help adults to progress quickly.

Do I need a piano?  I would prefer that every student have an acoustic or digital piano; however, I will start beginners on keyboards.  Keyboards are not the same as pianos: the touch is different, as well as pedaling.  If students need to start on a keyboard for financial reasons, I do want it to be touch sensitive.  That allows students to play loud and soft depending on the pressure of touch.  If the student is still progressing well by the end of a year, it is time to invest in a piano or digital.  The Ft. Wood Credit Union paper and the classifieds on rollanet.org are good places to look for a decent used piano.

How often are lessons? Private lessons are taken once a week for 30 minutes, and one-hour group lessons are taken 4 to 5 times a year. The cost of tuition is explained in detail in Policies.  In addition to the private lesson students will  also have computer lab assignments.

Do parents attend lessons with the child? It is usually helpful for parents to attend lessons with young children (under age 8).  In addition, they will need lots of support with their home practice and theory lessons.  A few students will "act up" if a parent is in the room.  Those students do better without a parent in attendance, but will still need supervision at home.

Do you have any openings? You may check the Schedule to see if there are any openings.  If there is an opening that would meet your needs, please call the studio to arrange an interview.

How can I get my piano tuned? Danny Creech in Rolla at (573) 341-2761 and is a reliable tuners/technicians.  Please contact him or another tuner/technician before purchasing a piano.  A very old piano might seem to be a bargain, but it may need a lot of expensive work or not hold a tune.

How much practice is required? Pre-reading young beginners will need to begin with 10 minutes at least four days a week and work up to 15 minute sessions.  Older beginners should begin with 15 minutes and work up to 20 minute sessions.  By the time students are in their third book, their minimum practice should be 30 minutes at least four days per week.  Of course, additional practice will move them toward their goals sooner.
